AFHS Student Handbook 2024-25

Committed to helping all students gain the essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be prepared for college, career, and community.

As Cavemen we are....

Mastering these dispositions is crucial for your success at AFHS and in life. AFHS Cavemen are expected to be PROUD!

You Have Got This!

ACADEMIC HELP

Most days, except Wednesday, second period is extended 25 minutes for studying or getting help. Sign up at rtischeduler.com using your student login. Skipping an assigned flex session will result in an A2/B6 truancy. Teachers are also available 30 min. before/after school. Check Skyward/Canvas for assignments. Inform your teacher, admin, advocate, or counselor if you’re struggling in a class. Maintain academic integrity; plagiarism software is used in classes. Avoid submitting or failing to cite others’ work. AI (Chat GPT) aids brainstorming, but your work must be original. See full policy by clicking the link here.

BE HERE MATTERS!

ATTENDANCE

Each class has a six absence limit per term. After six it’s hard to fix, and you may not get the grade you want. After a pattern of six absences, an admin will discuss your options, including dropping classes. Unexcused absences, truancies, or excused absences without a pre-approval form or a doctor’s note count. Other interventions include a truancy course, restricted hall/parking pass, limited activity participation, tracking, and mandated flex attendance. Check out a digital hall pass before leaving class. Passes expire after 7 minutes. Expired passes result in truancies and a truancy course. Click here to see full policy.

PROUD!

BEHAVIOR AT SCHOOL

Anyone who disrupts the learning environment will face school consequences. Being in the right place at the right time solves most issues. Students will attend PASS (Positive Academic Support System) and complete a course for persistent issues. Suspension from school is used for serious violations such as harassment, criminal behavior, drugs, fighting, sexual offenses, theft, weapons, discriminatory or threatening language, and insubordination. The school is equipped with cameras in public areas and vape/fight sensors in bathrooms. Click here to see full policy.

BE PRESENT!

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Schools without cell phones have increased learning and engagement. The expectation is to learn without personal electronic devices. Store devices at home, in a backpack, or at a location provided by your teacher. You may be asked to place devices out of reach for the class or bring them to the office for parent pick up. Bullying or accessing inappropriate material will lead to a device ban (including Chromebooks). Internet traffic is monitored. This policy covers devices with internet, texting, or photo capabilities. Emergency communication can occur through the main office. Click here to see full policy.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS!

DRESS CODE

The dress code is about context. What you wear should fit the activity. School is a place of learning, so your dress should reflect it. You will be asked to change if your clothing does not fit the school setting. Clothing referring to or promoting alcohol, tobacco, drugs, violence, crime, sexual harassment, or associated with gangs is not allowed at school. Clothing should be sufficient to cover undergarments and not excessively short or revealing. Click to see ASD policy and examples.

BE SAFE!

PARKING

Juniors and Seniors can purchase parking permits for $20 at the finance office. 1 permit per car. Park in the south lot or driving range, not faculty or visitor spots. Tickets range from $10 to $50 depending on the violation or if booted. Move your car by 2:30 from the driving range to avoid towing. The speed limit is 5 mph, and reckless driving or loitering during class will result in losing your parking pass. There is limited parking, so arrive early. Follow posted city parking rules off-campus. Our resource officer can help if there is an accident. Click here to see full policy.

C:ASS CHANGE POLICY!

CLASS CHANGES

We understand that students at times wants to make changes to their schedules. To ensure integrity to the process, AFHS has set class change guidelines.

After 3 weeks, up to mid-term, class changes are only available for the following:

  • A teacher requests the change;
  • A student drops or withdraws from a concurrent enrollment class;
  • There is an extenuating circumstance that warrants a change. This change MUST include communication with student, parent(s), teachers, and possibly the administrator.
  • Hard NO policy after mid-term for grading integrity purposes.
  •
